Question : Cable/dsl router throughput?

I have a client who is interested in using a Dlink or linksys cable/dsl router as a cheap firewall on a Fractional T-3 limited at 20Mbps. I realize some only have a 10Mbps Ethernet interface on the wan side, but some, like the Dlink 804, have Fast Ethernet on the wan side, not sure about any Linksys. Does anyone know if any will support that much bandwidth?

Answer : Cable/dsl router throughput?

I would NOT use the basic Linksys or DLink routers (BESFR41 or DI-604) for anything above 1/2 MB -- certainly NOT 20 MB.  You need a much higher end router.  DLInk provides them, as does Netgear, and I don't know if Linksys goes that high -- even the BESFX41 is a cable/dsl router.  Basically you must get away from cable / dsl routers, as they are ALL too slow.

You can get high-end cisco, pix, and others, but they are pricey and hard to configure.  Since the Linksys, Dlink and Netgear are all Cisco clones and a lot easier to configure than a cisco, I suggest you do a lot of checking on the 3 sites.  Do NOT go for a cable / dsl model, get a t-1 type instead.
