Question : How do I stop my computer from acting as a DHCP server? winipcfg not responding.

With the aid of a microsoft technicial support rep. I forced a network betweem 2 computers. I now am trying to network my computer to another computer and a cable modem. I have been unable to accomplish neither one nor the other. My computer is acting as a DHCP server providing an IP and subnet mask which I cannot release. When I use winipcfg it stops responding if I attempt to 'release' or 'release all.' I have re-installed windows 98, removed my network card and drivers, reinstalled new drivers and the problem persists.
I think if I can prevent my computer from acting as a DHCP server this would fix the problem but I do not know how to do this. Any suggestions would be helpfull.

cool, I have a d-link,(704P) so I know the ip config the d-link uses 192.168.0.1 (dhcp scope is 100-254)as it's default so on the clients set them up like this ip 192.168.0.2 (and the the other 192.168.0.3) mask 255.255.255.0 default gateway 192.168.0.1 enable dns and use the dns ip given by your isp (or 192.168.0.1 disable wins add NetBEUI to both machines
netBEUI for XP http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q301/0/41.asp
hen on the client from a dos prompt type ping 127.0.0.1 ping 192.168.0.x Where x is the ip of the client) ping 192.168.0.1 ping the isp assigned ip of the host (the external ip of the router, you can find thisout by opening IE and in the address bar type http://192.168.0.1 that will take youto the logon page of the router, you can get it's ip info from there, after you log in) ping 206.169.61.185 ping www.experts-exchange.com please post the results here you should be good to go
