Question : Unable to ping by name

Hi guys, I have a situation where someone can ping by IP address but cannot ping by name. He called his ISP for support, and they told him to contact microsoft or reinstall his OS. My question is what does reinstalling his OS have to do with resolving names to IP addresses? This is a DNS error..shouldn't they be able to help him and not send him to MS or do a reinstall. Thanks

try to run http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe
and see if it can fix your winsock problems.
can you nslookup any of the sites type nslookup www.google.com
try to trace route some internet ip addresses and see where you are missing.
