Question : Avaya 5610SW IP Unregisters from IP Office 500

I recently started working remotely and decided to go the VoIP route to make my being physically out of the office a bit more transparent. I'm no expert on the matter and I'm sure their are simpler implementations but this is what I have to work with so here we go.

My main office has an Avaya IP Office 500 unit running v4.0 (10) that handles the in-office phone service. This has been working without issue for years now. We have a manager server that runs the supporting applications for IP Office.

Here at my remote office I have a fairly reliable DSL connection and a Netgear FVS318 VPN router. I have a site-to-site tunnel setup from here to an Linksys RV042 at the main office. The tunnel has been very reliable so far. Average round trip ping between the networks is in the low 30ms and no apparent packet loss.

I have an 5610SW IP phone connected to the FVS318 router here in my remote office. It is setup and pointed at the IP Office system over the VPN. I have the initial setup completed. The phone has an extension, user and incoming call route associated with it. I can receive and place calls from the phone reliably and the audio quality is pretty good. Not a lot of echo, drop out or other issues, at least with phone calls.

However, when I attempt to retrieve Voicemail using the phone LCD menu system I run into issues. I can enter the on-screen voicemail menu and retrieve messages and listen to them successfully, but when I attempt to interact with the messages in my voicemail, be it deleting them, saving them or rewinding them etc., the phone locks up and is stuck in the voicemail menu system. The only way to get out of the voicemail menu and back to the main call screen is to reboot the phone. In addition, the phone will occasionally reboot on its own, usually not during a call, but while attempting to use other menu functions, hold, transfer, etc.

I've looked at the system monitor while performing these function in the voicemail menu on the phone. Below is the output. It appears as though as soon as I press the button on the phone for the menu function the phone is un-registering. Any ideas what the issue may be? I'd really like to get this working if possible. Thanks for your time.

Answer : Avaya 5610SW IP Unregisters from IP Office 500

Here's a few things to try, I'll put the most important at the top and the lease likey at the bottom.

01.  Are you running VoicemailPro on Server 2003 or Server 2008?  I will assume 2003, if so have you opened the windows firewall correctly?  Click here for a link to a batch file that will correctly set the exceptions for you...  http://marketingtools.avaya.com/knowledgebase/ipoffice/general/firewall/index.htm  If Server 2008, you will need to either look up the known ports on the Avaya Site and set the exception manually or I can email you the batch file I built to do it but I cannot post it here.

02.  Your linksys to netgear vpn is not supported, I mention it because there are lots of know issues with the methods linksys/cisco use to manage site to site vpn's outside of there hardware scope.  I would suggest replacing the linksys with a Netgear FVS338 or FVX538 but you could replace your FVS318 with a compatible linksys unit.  If you decide to go the netgear route I can send you or post some links to documents that will walk you through the vpn creation process, but its very straight forward.  You might also consider a software VPN using your 318 and a RRAS Server on a 2003 or 2008 DC if you don't want to purchase new hardware.

03.  Try building a static route for the TFTP Server on the IP Office side so that the IP Offce knows an exact route to your IP Set/VPN.  You would do this in Manager under IP Routes.  It would need to be something like this...

192.168.1.0 [your lan segment]
255.255.255.0 [your subnet mask]
192.168.1.1 [the lan gateway the ipo uses to see the vpn]

04.  Upgrade to 4.2.17 or the new 5.x.x IP Office Firmware on the IP Office, and do and upgrade o the VoicemailPro software to the same revision.  If you get a chance look at the IPO knowledge base, there are tons of known issues with the 4.1 revision.

hope that helps, let me know if I can be of anymore help.
