Question : Public DNS Server Blues
|
|
Hi all,
Hope you can help me with this, I think I'm more than halfway there...
I have a dedicated web server. It is located at a datacenter and hooked up to a nice internet backbone.
I am running Windows 2000, IIS, and Microsoft's DNS server software. I am running a firewall and blocking unnecessary TCP, UDP, etc.
I am hosting several sites off of this box. I need URLs for my DNS server so that I can plug them into the registrar's "Primary and Secondary domain name server" for all of my domains. So I need DNS1.MYDOMAIN.COM and DNS2.MYDOMAIN.COM set up so that my domains answer to my DNS server on my dedicated box.
I contacted my registrar and they set up DNS1.MYDOMAIN.COM and DNS2.MYDOMAIN.COM and pointed them to my dedicated server. Whoopie!
I set up my DNS server and added entries for my domains.
I took one of my test domains and pointed it to DNS1.MYDOMAIN.OM and DNS2.MYDOMAIN.COM.
I went to www.dnsstuff.com and ran the utilities to troubleshoot any DNS issues. I worked through all the issues and everything is peachy as far as they are concerned.
I type in the test url from my home PC and the *site comes up no problem*
I proxy out and go to the domain name, *site comes up no problem.*
But when I try to access the test site from my work PC, it cannot find the server and the site does not come up. Why?
I have other domains on my server set up using my registrar's DNS server, and I can see them fine from my work PC.
It seems that I have some kind of configuration issue with my server that may be preventing certain places from seeing my DNS server. I imagine it can be a DNS configuration issue or even possibly a firewall issue. I doubt that the setup of my workplace is incorrect (if it was I wouldn't be able to see any of my domains... or any website for that matter...)
Also, its been 2 months since the setup so I doubt it's a propagation issue.
So, how do I fix this problem so my DNS server (and domains using my DNS server) can be seen from anywhere and work consistently?
Thanks for any help you can give me!
P.S. I know there are alot of 3rd-party services out there that handle DNS, they're not what I'm looking for. I need to get this server working properly with it's own DNS, so please focus on this issue and not alternate DNS options (sorry to have to mention this but I've lost control of some previous questions, if there's a chance I just want to head it off :o)
Thank you for your help!

It appears that the problem is that you can't get to your name servers from your work location and that it is probably due to some configuration at your work location. Is there any chance that your firewall is blocking traffic from your work location? I know that you don't want to use a third party DNS service, but you might want to consider setting up an account with one of the free ones (ie. www.zoneedit.com) and adding their servers as a third & fourth option (after your name servers) for test purposes.
