Question : Hosts File with multiple IP's linked to common name
|
|
I was wondering if it's possible to configure a Hosts/LMHosts file with 2 IP's pointed to a single common name; For example: 192.168.200.1 Server1 192.168.200.2 Server1
The reason for this is to not use the software that comes with the dual NIC's to manage a server, but still have my users see the box with a single common name?
I should also mention it's a Win2003 Domain with the box in question a Win2000 member server and DNS is fully functional on a pair of Win2003 DC's.

If you put both NICs on the same subnet (as you suggest) and just have them register in DNS all should be fine. The DNS server will most likely give out one address then the other in a round-robin fashion and give some sort of load balacing. Any reason for not using the teaming software to team the two into a 2 x 1gbit or 2 x 100mbit connection?
I'm not sure where you are thinking of putting this hosts table but yes it is possible .. but afaik it will always only take the first entry that matches the hostname.
