Question : Internet speed too slow!
I am on a 56kbps dialup modem. Recently the internet speed has become too slower. The pages at EE are getting downloaded at a very slow rate (It takes several minutes to download a page). Also the files are getting downloaded at a rate less than 2kbps. But previously it downloaded at more than 3.5kbps. Is there any problem? If so how to rectify it?

Adonis24, i'm sorry to say but using dial up is always going to be varying speeds. Many factors effect that; time of day you connect, internet traffic, even phone line traffic. Another thing to understand about download speeds is this: when you connect at say 40.6kbps that is 40.6 kilo-BITS per second. There is 8 bits in a byte of data, so your 40.6 kbps speed is really only downloading at 5075 BYTES per second or 5.075K. So in order to download a web page that is say 2MB (for the ease of calculation) , it will take roughly 394.08 seconds or a little over 6 and a half minutes, pretty sad yes. So all of these tips, may only shave off few seconds. Still you are only going to be connected at a max of 56Kbps, the FCC won't allow any higher I don't know why but that's just how it is. So in a perfect world your maximum download speed will only be 7K. When you browse the internet, your computer saves the web pages in your temporary internet files, so that next time you visit that site, your computer allready has a majority of the information downloaded. For instance say your computer saves 1.5MB of that 2MB web page, that only leaves 500K to download, so that 6 and half minutes is reduced to 1.6 minutes because your computer already had that information from the last time you visited that page. What you need to do is go to your internet options, tools->Internet Options. Make sure you set your history to about 7 days just to start. Under the general tab, find the section titled Temporary internet files. Click on the settings button, you will see a slider, slide that amount up to about 100MB to start. You will also make sure that your browser checks for new versions of stored pages automatically. Now keep in mind that this only works for pages you go to more than once, so you wont notice results for a while but say you come to EE a lot, the first time you come here it will load slow, however after that it will be faster. Good luck, I hope this sheds a bit more light on this subject.
