Question : Remote Shutdown of a WinXP PC from WinXP Laptop

Hi

I have a WinXP computer which i use for a server for all of my large files, (e.g. music, dvds).  It is connected to to my laptop via a WLAN in my house.  I am having problems in shutting down the computer from the laptop.

The laptop has Noron Antivirus and Norton Internet Security, the other computer does not have a firewall or virus checker, as i scan via the WLAN.  When attempting to remote shutdown i have turned off the firewall and anti virus to eliminate any problems.

I have tried shutdown -i in cmd without success, and standard command in cmd.exe also without success. In shutdown -i I click Find Computers or Browse and it says Cannot Open Directory.

Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong or the correct methods and commands to run in order to perform a remote shutdown.

I am an administrator for both computers.

Thanks in advance

Remote Shutdown

Shutdown.exe is available in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit. It is a command-line tool that you can use to shut down or restart a local or remote computer that is running Windows 2000 or Windows NT 4.0. If you want to schedule a computer to shut down and restart at a specific time, use Shutdown.exe in combination with the at command or Task Scheduler.

PsShutdown is a command-line utility similar to the shutdown utility from the Windows 2000 Resource Kit, but with the ability to do much more. In addition to supporting the same options for shutting down or rebooting the local or a remote computer, PsShutdown can logoff the console user or lock the console (locking requires Windows 2000 or higher). PsShutdown requires no manual installation of client software.
