Question : Allowed E-mail Characters

What are the allowed and not allowed characters is e-mail addresses ?
Is it different for the part before @ and the part after @ ?

After the @ sign the domain needs to be a valid domain.

aol.com
msn.com

Etc.

The characters before the @ sign can include:

periods .
underscores _
dashs -

But other then that special characters should be avoided because they mean things to the system, and will most of the time be kicked as invalid.
