Question : Adding a Win2k3 Server to a single Win2k Server domain - Adprep reports success but no /domainprep entries in AD

EXISTING ENVIRONMENT:

Win2k SP4 - with all updates excluding IE7
Single Domain Controller

ATTEMPTED:

adding a newly built and fully patched, excluding IE7, server Win2k3 R2 to domain and performing DC promo

PROCESS:

Logged in as primary domain admin

Copied win2k3 I386 folder to D:\win2k3\i386 on win2k server

performed adprep /forestprep command on server - reported successful result
used ADSIEdit.msc to verify object
CN=Windows2003Update,CN=ForestUpdates,CN=Configuration,DC=domain-name,DC=com
successful

waited 30 minutes

performed adprep /domainprep command on server - reported successful result although took only a few seconds and I did not see the list of updated objects posted as in the /forestprep command
used ADSIEdit.msc to verify object
CN=Windows2003Update,CN=DomainUpdates,CN=System,DC=domain-name,DC=com
could not find object in AD

RESULT:

When attempting to perform DC promo on the Win2k3 server I get a error message saying that I am trying to join a domain that is not compatible with my server during the "examining forest" phaze.

Both commands report to be fully successful and when reattempting to run adprep /domainprep the server reports that the command was previously completed with success and does not need to be rerun.

THOUGHTS and QUESTION:

Unfortunately I do not have a system state backup form the Win2k server which I could fall back to. Is there any other way I can retry the /domainprep command on the Win2k server? Maybe by forcing the process?

I've looked through KB's but they only list solutions when the commands reported to fail. Nothing on my situation.

Your new server is probably R2; you need to run another adprep /forestprep in the folder \cmpnents\R2\adprep on the second R2 CD.
