Question : DirXML/IM Starter kit questions

Hello all.
I am trying to figure out what I am going to need to do to implement DirXML/IM Starter Kit, or if there is another way to do what I want.
Long story short: I run a Netware 6.5 OES network, and have a few random Win 2K & 2K3 servers for specialized tasks. All users authenticate to the NDS/eDirectory on the Netware server, I don't have a domain or AD for the few windows boxes. They are in the "workgroup" mode.
The company has received new copiers with scanning functions and we now have a Windows Storage Server 2003, where these scanned files will reside. No, I can't get rid of the storage server and use Netware. i must use the Win box. I want to be able to sync the Netware usernames and passwords with this Storage server and am looking for ways to do it.
Do I need to promote one of my other Win servers to a Domain Controller for the Starter kit to work? The storage server can not be a domain controller. And how would adding a domain controller to the mix screw me with regards to my current netware stuff?
I believe the IM Starter Kit is probably the way to go, but I am confused on the windows side of things. I don't mind managing shares directly on the windows box, it's the users and passwords that I want to make easy for me to manage.
Thanks.

I'd try tackling it by having the NetWare server be the DC for the Domain. You'll need to synch the users' eDirectory passwords with the Simple Password (or mebbe it's the Universal Password - I can never remember which; ShineOn knows). But if the copier app is simply looking for an SMB-based authentication source, then the NetWare server should be able to provide that.
I note in passing that the current Support Pack for NetWare v6.5 is SP6. SP3 is about a year or so out-of-date.
