Question : IM (Instant Messenger) usage stats - how to?

I have been asked to gather IM usage statistics.  We are not concerned with the content, but more so the amount of time spent using the applications.   Can this be done without the use of a proxy or 3rd party software?

Also, if it is a mix of IM applications ranging from AOL, MSN, etc. to Trillian, can this be done across the board?

Can you use traps or anything like that?
