Question : Broadband speed decreases when VPN established

I have speed checked my broadband speed at both my work and my home and get 8Mb download and 512Kb upload at both sites. When I connect my laptop to my works server via VPN however the speed test then reports the download speed at approx 400K and the upload at 200k - why?
