Question : Duplicate name on network...but there isn't?
|
|
Hi,
I know this question has been asked before and i've looked tghrough the various ansers, but can't seem to find a solution :(
We have a small network, 60 clients, 6 servers. It's an old NT 4 domain, with a mix of NT 4 and 2000 member Servers. We hjad a n old IP structure that was very weird, so as of yesterday we changed everything to a 10.1.0.0 range with a subnet of 255.255.254.0 Changes were made to the static IPs of the Servers and the DHCP scopes were chaged as well. Yesterday afternoon, after the changes, all users could login okay and they could again this morning. Howver, we have one 2000 member Server that when it boots now says there is a duplicate name on the network, etc. We have not got another machine with the same name. Have checked and doubled checked, both DNS and WINS, for any old entries with the machine's old IP address in, but can't find any. No Servers have hosts files either. Could a users hosts file cause this?
Doing a nbtstat -n on this server gives:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.KELTEC>nbtstat -n
Local Area Connection: Node IpAddress: [10.1.0.24] Scope Id: []
NetBIOS Local Name Table
Name Type Status --------------------------------------------- MLI_GROUP_BRAD <42> GROUP Registered MLI2A9C57A3BRAD<42> UNIQUE Registered
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.KELTEC>
On my PC it gives: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>nbtstat -n
Local Area Connection: Node IpAddress: [10.1.0.217] Scope Id: []
NetBIOS Local Name Table
Name Type Status --------------------------------------------- ITD002 <00> UNIQUE Registered KELTEC <00> GROUP Registered ITD002 <20> UNIQUE Registered KELTEC <1E> GROUP Registered ITD002$ <03> UNIQUE Registered ADMINISTRATOR <03> UNIQUE Conflict ITD002 <03> UNIQUE Registered
So it's not even going the name of the Server (kel-dns-1) as a conflict, but the account name it's logged in as?
Any ideas what else I can try?
Any help or pointers greatly appreciated.
Neil.

When searching for netbios duplicates you must consider: Group name, computer name and user name. See if this helps!
