Question : Gmail to Outlook Express

Deleted 1,000's of old messages from gmail account, enabled POP. Left 40 current messages on Gmail server. Set up Outlook Express correctly. Used Send and Receive in OE, incoming messages numbered 265, all of which were from 2008, messages that had been deleted. Deleted messages from OE and clicked on Send/Receive again. ANOTHER 256 messages downloaded, beginning with another series of dates. There are only 40 messages in Gmail inbox. Where are these emails comming from and how do I get ONLY the 40 most recent messages?

did you empty your gmail trash account after you deleted the 1000's of messages?

if not ,  it's probably coming from there.

also check your inbox to see it actually has 40 messages and not 40 unread messages + 1000's of read messages.
