Question : Unidata file never completes backup

Hello Guys,

We have a Veritas Netbackup 5.1 mp3 appliaction running on a Windows
2k3 server and performing the master and media server duties. We are
currently backing up 41 client servers, Two of which are Unix boxes(Solaris 9) in a clusterd environment.  The other servers are all window
boxes.  All of the clients are using ethernet connections.  PROBLEM:
Backups complete without problem on all of the windows boxes.  Backups
complete in a reasonable amount of time with the EXCEPTION of one file on the Unix boxes(Soloris 9).
This file is called "Unidata".  Not only is it slow(125kps) backing up.  Its runs forever(two days and counting)and never completes the job.  We have a seperate Oracle database policy for backups which runs just fine.
We only want to back up "all local drive" in the other policy.  Why is it trying to backup this "Unidata" file? Why does it run forever?  HELP!!!

Answer : Unidata file never completes backup

I'm not exactly sure what your "Unidata" file is.  There are several vendors that use the term "unidata" for their products.  The first that comes to mind is IBM's database application.  If that's the case, and it's a database file, you are most likely going to have to lock the database while you're backing it up.  My guess is that the database is constantly receiving reads/writes and your backup program sees the file changing and tries to keep backing it up as it grows.  Unless you lock the database and stop the activity going to the unidata file, the backup will never complete.
