Question : VLAN setting for Data and VOIP which share same WAN port
|
|
Hi,
I am running data and voip on same physical network. My asterisk server is sitting behind firewall and using Voicepulse as VOIP provider for incoming and outgoing call.
15 workstations are using MAS-80 accounting software basically that requires file-sharing from two windows 2003 servers.
Here's simple sketch of my network
T1 modem <-----> Firewall <-------> Linksys srw224p <--------> Asterisk Server <--------> IP Phones <------> Workstations <---------> File Server The problem is that VOIP voice quality is poor. Especially on the other side of our phone. They say it sounds pretty choppy.
Q1. Setting up VLAN for IP phones and Asterisk will help voice quality issue?
Q2. How can I configure VLAN setting while VLAN1 and VLAN2 need to go out and in thru the same port firewall connected?
I have set COS value in each phone and switch already, and also give TRP port 4589, 5060, 5004 high priority. Though I cannot still see huge improvement.
Please Help.

Q1: Not necessarily. If you already have QOS setup on the switch then setting up a VLAN wont make any real difference. What is the quality like between phones on your own network?
The poor quality on external calls is probably due to packet loss on your T1 line. You need to implement QOS on the internet link and ideally this should be done at the ISP end aswell otherwise the sound you hear could become poor quality if other downloads are happening at the same time.
