Question : WDS, Router/Gateway/Wireless and configuration of hardware
|
|
Hi peeps
I have had a problem connecting a clients wireless network together, and in researching the problem, I have been told a few things that I am having difficulty confirming, so I was wondering if one of you guys can confirm or deny.
We supplied the client with a Router/Gateway/Wireless all in one (linksys WAG354G) and an expander (WRE54G) as he has quite a large house, and his ADSL connection is in an outbuilding. Well, router works fine, connects via ADSL and he can use the wireless from the router, but I cannot get the expander to work at all. Obviously, we do not want a wire trailing from the outbuilding to the house, so we need a way to 'boost' the wireless signal from the original to cover the whole house.
On researching the problem, i have been told that 'You cannot use an all-in-one router/gateway/wireless with an expander/access point because WDS must be disabled in such devices'
I 'can', I have been told, use either: external adsl modem + wireless router + AP OR gateway/router (adsl) + external wireless AP + external wireless AP in the house (repeater?).
Is this right? Does something in WDS 'break' the modem/wireless connection? I really want to get it right because the fellow is getting a little bit peeved, but noone in the office has ever come accross this problem before...
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

I would think this would work:
3-in-1 wireless gateway router -----crossover-------WRT54G (DHCP disabled, connected to LAN connection) -----WRE54G
