Question : Teamspeak connection to specific IP not working
|
|
Hi,
my little bro is a gamer; he [and all of his buddies] use a program called "Teamspeak", which basically allows you to talk to eachother, via a mic - over the net of course :-)
From what I can see, it uses UDP, and is ran (by default) on port 8767.
Now, he's never had any problems with it before, and even now, it works fine when connecting to all servers, except for one! Whereas this one server that he cannot connect to is the one that he and his mates usually use..
Me and him are both on the same LAN, connected with a hub -- we connect to the net via a Netgear ADSL Modem Router. I can connect fine to this server using the same program (same version as well) - but he cannot.
Note: Both mine and my bro's machines are Windows XP Home Edition SP1.
So, I'm basically asking for suggestions as to how to fix this.. I've already tried the following:
# Uninstall any firewalls (there aren't any firewalls installed anyway); # Run Ad-Aware, SpySweeper, and Microsofts Anti-Spyware program; # Ping the server -- gets 100% response; # Check Router logs *see below; # Connect to server on other machine -- yup, mine can connect (and so can all of my bro's mates machines); # Reinstall the Teamspeak application; # Reboot and try again; # Reboot into Safe Mode with Networking, and connect from there;
* When I check the connection logs of our Router, it shows nothing about any connections from my bros machine to the server - nor any blocked connections, etc... so, it would seem that the attempted connections aren't even leaving my bro's machine?!
I'm all out of ideas :-(
Anyone?
Thanks in advance. :)

Answer : Teamspeak connection to specific IP not working

Wow, sounds like you've already covered most of the bases. I can only think of a couple of things.
Verify in the TS connection settings (Session -> connect, not quick connect) that it is set to connect to port 8767. If you know the server admin, you might also ask him to change to a non-standard port and see if you have any better luck there.
I know you said you checked for firewalls, but did you remember the windows built in firewall. If I remember SP1 correctly, this is under Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right Click proper lan connection -> Properties -> Right hand tab (I forget the name).
Although I wouldn't recommend doing this without fully patching the OS, including applying SP2, you could also try bypassing the router and connected his machine straight to the ADSL modem. This would tell you whether the problem is with his computer or the router.
Another thought to to download a port scanner (search angryip on hotfiles.com) and scan the TS server port 8767 as well as other ports that may be open (ask the server admin what the port the TS admin console is running on). This will give you a better clue that the ports truley are blocked and it's not just TS that is having a problem connecting.
