Question : have lost permissions to a folder in xp

Hi there,

Was trying to make a folder private but accidently removed all rights and permissions to a this folder and now can not access the folder.  Have tried the cacls command but no luck.  Still get access denied.  Is there another program or command line command that will restore or override rights to this folder?

Answer : have lost permissions to a folder in xp

The owner of the folder can reinstate the access permissions.

Any administrator can "take ownership" of a folder, then grant themselves and anyone else access to the folder. If you already own the folder (or did in the first place), you should be able to go back to the Security settings for that folder and add your own information.

This information can usually be found by right clicking the folder, clicking properties. Under the security tab, you have access information. There is also an advanced tab that allows you, or an administrator, to "Take ownership" of the folder. Once someone has ownership, they can grant full access rights to whomever they see fit.
