|
|
.... from a XP Pro box.
I am trying to setup a dedicated server and need to access it remotely. The server will be in TX and I am in VA. What is the best method to be able to do this? pcAnywhere or using the Remote Desktop that comes with XP Pro? What settings need to be set in 2003, and what settings need to be set in XP etc....

Remote Desktop Connection won't enable any file transfer, but if you have the vpn required for RDC to work, you can simply map a drive to the server from your PC. And yes, it is so basic, it's almost scary.. In fact, it IS scary! If the vpn is built on a solid, fast connection, the lag will be tolerable.
I like RDC because: 1) It's free 2) Microsoft is fast to patch any vulnerablities that they find, even if they are half-fast (say it quickly) at some other stuff.
There are plenty of good arguments for other remote control programs, too. I would probably have one available as a backup, just in case RDC and Terminal Services ever lets you down. (There is a limit on concurrent connections, so if you forget to log off a session, it can "lock up". If a couple sessions lock up thusly, you may need to have someone onsite reset them, or have another means of controlling the server to do it yourself).
VNC is another great (and free) product. You can get it at: www.realvnc.com OR www.tightvnc.com Both are good products.
Also, more reading on RDC: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;814590
best of luck! jb
