Question : IIS 4.0 SMTP "Unknown" Error

The SMTP Service in IIS 4.0 MMC 1.0 is showing up as "Unknown".  When properties of the Snap-In are accessed, error window title "SMTP Configuration", with "Unknown Error (80005006)" Message.   I've un-installed the SMTP Service and then re-installed it, however the problem still persists.  How can I get the SMTP Service back up so that I can access the properties of this feature short of Un-Installing IIS.   Your assistance is GREATLY appreciated.

Answer : IIS 4.0 SMTP "Unknown" Error

The path is in accordance with the base paper and the server "appeared" to be working according to the tests.  However, the mail was not being sent and there was no way to access the properties of the IIS SMTP server due to this "Unknown Error".   It was decided that we would uninstall IIS and re-install it, as a result the "Unknown Error" message is no longer appearing and we can now access the properties of SMTP Snap-in which is now working.  I appreciate all the help.  This is one of those instances were there was no easy solution, above that its not something common either.   Once again, thanks to everyone who took the time to offer their assistance.
