Question : Can an PCI Router Card filter internet virus/content from other computers connected to the router card?

I am thinking of using a PCI router card instead of an external router to share internet connection (cable modem connection) and file sharing.
Does anyone know that if I have this type of setup, can the computer that has the router card in it, be used as a safe guard for the other computers - meaning, can I load anti-virus or internet monitoring/filtering software on the router card computer, and it will check internet traffic that comes through the router from the other computers? Is this too much to expect?
My thinking is that if the router software can be a firewall for all small network traffic, then why not make the computer check do filtering as well? It would be less of a headache if one computer could handle the worries of filtering and virus protection, and not have to have each computer have the exact same software on it. I hope you understand what I mean.
The card I am looking at is an ASound with Sygate software. Any thoughts you have would be very welcomed. Also, I am looking for some good internet monitoring/tracking software that identifies usernames. I work for a small school, and not too happy with what we currently have.
Thanks much! bench_777

I bought one to test it, and immediately sent it back. It claimed to be a 4-port router -- it was nothing but a HUB, and there is a huge difference. A linksys box can be got for around $45 from most places, the BESFR41 is terrific, so save yourself the marketing scam of these plug in cards and buy a real router. If you are short on space and want a tiny one, try the netgear or Dlink, but Linksys are the most reliable.
