Question : Access two networks with a windows XP computer
|
|
I have a win XP pro laptop that will be connected to two networks. The first connection is for the internet It is a wireless internet connection (EVDO). The second connection is to a local network using the ethernet card.
Is it possible to access both the internet and the intranet websites at the same time? My goal is to let someone do a remote desktop connection or remote assistance, and be able to access the local network too.

No problem to add a second network card to an XP machine and have one one connected to the LAN using one subnet, and the other connected to the Internet or a second LAN using a different subnet. However you can only configure a default gateway on one, in this case the one connected to the Internet . The other will have to be left blank. Anything done from the XP machine will work fine.
If you wish to route traffic through the XP machine, you need to modify the registry. XP will not do routing in it's default state. The required change can be found here: http://www.petri.co.il/configuring_routing_in_w2k_pro_xp_pro.htm If you simply want a user to connect from outside to the XP machine using remote desktop, and then from there access other machines, the routing changes should not be necessary.
