Question : Unable to access user account in control panel.  XP Home

I go into the control panel to access user accounts and I get an Windows cannot access the specified path or file.  You may not have permission to access.  The problem is that it says this to just about every one that I try to open.  Add & remove programs, user accounts, display etc..

There are viruses and trojans that were found when I scanned with AVG in safe mode.  I was wondering, I am pretty sure that the infections wiped out the system files?  Any way to fix them good with out doing a full system install?

Answer : Unable to access user account in control panel.  XP Home

Do you have any restore points you can try?  Restore points could bring the virus/trojan back so be selective with the date you go back to.

My first thought would be to try and do a windows repair if you have the disk. That will replace system files in the Windows directory.

Failing that, you will need to do a full re-install I suspect. Always a hassle, but you can clean it all out with a Full install instead of battling with simple things like this. You don't know what else has been corrupted.Hope that helps
