Question : exchange cached mode

with exchange cached mode it creates an offline copy of outlook in the local machine as also there is a periodic process that checks the mailbox on the exchange server for new messages.

I would like to know the cycle of the periodic process that checks the mailbox on the exchange server for any new email, because I can't really notice any delay when someone sends me an email, I have also done a test from 02 boxes and didn't notice any delay , it is just like the outlook is permanantely connected to the server.

this leads me to be curious what is exchange cached mode is good for , seeing that  its purpose is to reduce the connection usage of outlook to exchange server.

any comments?

thanks

Answer : exchange cached mode

all exchange cached mode is a new name for "make available offline" that was used in earlier versions of Outlook.  Thats really it.  it is really only designed to be used on laptops since they aren't always connected a network so that a user can view their "old" email if they can't connect to the exchange server.

>>why it's a check box to select or deselect exchange cached mode option?
b/c there is no need to use cached mode on a workstation in an office, since it will never be offline (unless the connection to the exchange server fails)

>>I mean why should it be an option other than by default?
why store the EXACT same info in two different places unless there is a need (once of the workstation, and once on the server)  All that does is needlessly waste hard drive space.

>>Is in the previous versions of outlook that didn't have the cached mode option, emails and folders are in the server and each time the user tries to open an email or a folder outlook has to go to the server and retrieve that item
they did have the option, it was just called "make available offline"... that is why whenever you setup outlook on a new box, it asks you if you travel with this computer,,, if you choose yes,,, then it enabled "cached mode"

in the outlook client at the bottom right you will see the status of either "offliine" or "online"
if it says online, you are viewing live data on the exchange server
if it says offline, you are viewing "old" cached data.
