Question : "The local device name is already in use" error message on XP Pro clients
|
|
I am the IT guy for a police department, the officers use panasonic toughbooks in the patrol cars, they also have desktops running xp pro at police headquarters.
On my XP client machines, I receive the "The local device name is already in use" error message when you trying to connect to mapped drives on win 2003 server.
This is a major problem becasue we cannot connect to our shares.
How can I fix this ?

Are you cloning the machines? You need to change the computer name in the duplicate machines. Right-click my computer (in XP: Start | right-click "My Computer") | Properties | Computer Name | Change | Type in unique computer name | Ok | OK | reboot.....
If you clone, you will also need to change the sysid of the computers - download newsid.exe from www.sysinternals.com
cheers...
