Question : Manually specify secondary (or tertiary) DNS servers in Windows XP with DHCP?
|
|
Does anyone know of a way to specify a secondary (or tertiary) DNS server in the TCP/IP settings in XP, but still have the connection setup to use DHCP and to use whatever DNS server DHCP provides as the primary server?
I routinely go to different offices and always want to have each office's server be my primary DNS server. However, I sometimes need to bypass the LAN server and use a public external DNS server. Whenever I have to do this I have to go into the network configuration and change it around and it's just a huge pain in the butt.
I've tried to just leave the primary DNS server field empty and put in the public DNS server IP for the "alternate DNS server", but when I do this it automatically ignores any DNS servers obtained via DHCP and makes that external one my primary.
Any ideas?

It's been my experience that tertiary and sometimes even secondary DNS IP's will be iqnored. I use a program called MultiNetwork Manager that allows you to create profiles for each location and then select the profile or even configure MNM to auto select the network. It's not a free program but at $14.95 it's well worth the headache it saves me. It even does wireless configs:
