Question : D-Link Router Will Not Get DHCP IP From Verizon
|
|
I've got a customer with a D-Link Wireless router (DI_524?). They can't get a DHCP IP address from Verizon. I did the release/renew thing with no luck. I connected one of the computers directly to the DSL modem and it worked like a charm. Netwoprk connection on the PC is set for dynamic IP. I swapped out the D-Link router with a different model. Same problem. Firmware appears to be up to date (hard to tell with these guys). All phones/alarms./cable boxes have filters. Unplugged 'em all just to be sure. The only thing the customer said had changed was that Comcast had done some work around the time the router quit working. Verizon say it's not their problem since it works without the router. So I'm stumped.
One odd thing I noticed was that after trying to renew the IP the router would occasionally fill in the first octet of the subnet mask with 255. Hmmm.

I would try csgeekpyro's suggestion first and then if that does not work, plug in a PC and get a DHCP IP. Do an ipconfig /all and write down the IP, mask, gateway, and DNS servers. Then hard code those into the router and plug it in with the same ethernet cable as the PC (just to use a known good cable). If you can then make a connection out that proves that nothing is wrong with the hardware of the NAT box, just an interaction problem with DHCP. I really do think csgeekpyro's suggestion is likely to work though. The other one to try is rebooting the DSL modem in between plugging in the PC and the NAT box. Sometimes those modems only remember one MAC address so that you are not allowed to have more than one PC.
Please though, whatever you do, don't leave that staticly coded IP in the NAT box (even if it works) as it could mess other people up later and it just makes the network guys unhappy.
