Question : Is it possible to force a lower ADSL training rate at the CPE with a Cisco 837

Hi All,

I have a cisco 837 ADSL router. i have an 8mb/384k service with my isp,
because of my distance from the exchange, and changes in copper gauges the router only trains at around 6.4mb downstream with a noise margin of 2.0db in this configuration the service is highly unstable and losses sync around 30 times a day, my ISP said the only thing they would do is drop the downstream training rate at the DSLAM to 1.5mb.

Is there a way i can, on my cisco 837 CPE device force the modem to only train to 5.5mb or 6mb down to create a good balance of speed and stability.

This service was Rock solid when i had it as a 1.5mb about a month ago. I have tried to Shape my dialer to 6mb however the ATM still trains at 6.4 and results in an unstable service.

I know i can force atm rates on the CPE with SHDSL but i have not been able to find a way to do this on ADSL

Your help would be greatly appreciated

Answer : Is it possible to force a lower ADSL training rate at the CPE with a Cisco 837

I havent tried to do this but, commands on ATM interface show:

837(config-if)#rate-limit ?
  input   Rate limit on input
  output  Rate limit on output

(config-if)#rate-limit

Could be worth researching this a bit on cisco site.
