Question : Confused about DNS errors reported with Network Diagnostics
|
|
My network seems to be running (files and printers share...) and I do have Internet access via my new satellite modem. I am concerned about some apparent security issues (my post of www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Broadband/Q_21688185.html) but now I'm getting bogged down with errors reported in Help & Support's Network Diagnostics.
I am frustrated that tools like this report errors -- or at least failures in a test -- but don't provide information in readily-understood ways about what to do about it. I am not inexperienced with computers, and understand networking basics, but if I get confused, how on earth do people who wal out of Best Buy with a new system cope? Or do they even bother? [End of rant!]
Anyway, here is what I see with ipconfig /all on my main desktop system: C:\Documents and Settings\Eric Fletcher>ipconfig /all
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : ERIC Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : anikast.net

When I ran the Network Diagnostics, I get the following for Network Adapters (I'm only selected items from the report to keep it small; tell me if I need to include more): WAN Miniport (IP) (PASSED) DefaultIPGateway = 142.154.37.42(Same Subnet) (PASSED DNSServerSearchOrder (PASSED) 206.222.68.10 (PASSED) 206.222.68.130 (PASSED) IPAddress = 142.154.37.42 (PASSED) Linksys LNE100TX(v5) Fast Ethernet Adapter (FAILED) DefaultIPGateway = 192.168.1.1(Same Subnet) (PASSED) DHCPServer = 192.168.1.1 (PASSED) DNSHostName = ERIC DNSServerSearchOrder (FAILED) 10.100.2.5 (FAILED) [it timed out] 198.235.216.130 (FAILED) [it also timed out]
A bit further along, under DNS servers, I get something similar: WAN Miniport (IP) (PASSED) DNSServerSearchOrder (PASSED) 206.222.68.10 (PASSED) 206.222.68.130 (PASSED) Linksys LNE100TX(v5) Fast Ethernet Adapter (FAILED) DNSServerSearchOrder (FAILED) 10.100.2.5 (FAILED) [Request timed out.] 198.235.216.130 (FAILED) [Request timed out.]
This makes me think that the router is working properly (I assume it is the WAN miniport thing) but there is a problem how my LAN is set up. My network consists of 2 desktop systems connected via Ethernet cable to a Linksys WRT54GSv4 router, and a laptop running wireless G (to the router). All run WinXP Home with the latest patches and updates. A Network Diagnostic on the laptop reports something similar to the above, but the FAILED parts relate to its Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN. Both desktop units have 2 ethernet adapters, but only one is attached to the router from each. (On one, the plug access for the SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter on the mb was awkward and loose so I added the Linksys board; on the other, it reports 2 although I've never even looked inside it to see why.)
Can someone help me understand what these FAILED messages mean and what (if anything) I should be doing to rectify problems?

hmm, I may just have the pages, if I can remember where they are. Satellite maybe a bit different though, are you going through the receiver? If so, find the help channel on the Internet stuff for your satellite provider. They have a channel that runs around the clock on just how to get your Internet set up.
My pages refer mostly to DSL modems and routers, but if you'd like a look, they are at:
http://www.Musics.com/LinkSys/BEFW11S4/BEFW11S4_LinkSys_Router_Setup.html http://www.Musics.com/Westell/2200/Westell_2200_Setup.html
You're nameservers are set up in Network Properties under the protocols and tcp/ip properties, or, you can use the little tv looking thing for the lan or wan in the system tray and properties, again, for tcp/ip
