Question : How to fix a static ip address on a computer on a wireless network?

Hello,

Some info to assist answering this question.

The wireless router is a Linksys wireless -B Broadband Router.

It is presently set to obtain an ip automatically. The other options are  static IP, PPPoE, RAS, PPTP etc.,

There is an option for a local ip address and that is set to 192.168.1.1. The local DHCP server is set to enable and some space for Static DNS and WINS.

The status information shows its mac address and the internet IP address. This is 192.168.3.10 and the default gateway is 192.168.3.1 and this is the IP address of the VPN/Router/Firewall.

There is a security tab too and this allows for filtering ip address ranges.

On the VPN Box which the wireless router is plugged into, the Use static IP address is checked with the ip address, lets call it it 81.XXX.XXX.XXX with an IP Subnet Mask with 252 at the end and the gateway ip address as XX.XXX.XXX.121 and it uses two DNS servers.

The firewall is a Netgear FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall. I could fixed the IP address of the wireless router, if this would help.

QUESTION:

My question is how to log on from a laptop with a fixed IP address rather than dynamically obtaining one.
I need to log in with a static IP address in order to get onto the VPN.

Please tell me how to change the settings on both the laptop and the routers in order to log in on a fixed IP address on the laptop. Thanks in advance.

Answer : How to fix a static ip address on a computer on a wireless network?

As I understand your network is as follows,

ISP ------------------- VPN Box ---------------------Linksys Router ----------  Client PCs
x.x.x.121           81.x.x.x     192.168.3.1              192.168.3.10

And all you need to know is how to setup the client laptop to get a static IP from the linksys router. Right?

What you have to do is, You can assign a static IP of 192.168.3.2 for the laptop. Now, go to the page on the wireless router where you set that for DHCP and there should be a setting for assigning the starting IP address which the router would start assigning to the clients. Put in a starting IP of 192.168.3.3, now whenever a client requests an IP from the Linksys Router, it would start assigning that from 192.168.3.3 and go on upto the maximum number of clients specified.
To set a static ip on the laptop, right click on the network places, select properties, you will see the wireless card listed there, right click on that and go to properties, choose TCP/IP, and click properties and enter the IP address of 192.168.3.2 and the subnet mask, click on apply,OK and close it.

Hope this was what you were looking for.

Cheers,
CoolJai
