Question : Fibre Link

Hi Experts,

We've had some cabling installed. There's a single fibre run and I need to purchase the hardware to connect the two sites - I'm not sure what interface I need to use with the fibre patch panel. It's four-core, there are four ST connections in the patch on both ends. I think they are ST - they're the ones that you twist on. Can someone suggest a Procurve switch, and the right GBICs, patch cables etc. Would be very grateful for any advice.

Answer : Fibre Link

Then I recommend Cisco 3750 stackables
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps5023/index.html

3 each Catalyst 3750 48 10/100 + 4 SFP Standard Multilayer Image (Cisco part #: WS-C3750-48TS-S)
Plus 2 each of the appropriate SFP Module:
 Cisco part #: GLC-SX-MM=   (Multi-mode fiber)
 Cisco part #: GLC-LH-SM=    (Single-mode fiber)

For the other end you can use a simple media converter like these:

Where you select the appropriate converter for single mode or multimode fiber

Select the appropriate fiber jumper cables, either single or multi mode, and the correct end connectors. You need ST-LC for the Cisco end, and ST-SC for the media converters
