Question : printing to a printer on a different subnet
|
|
I have two networks, the one network uses an IP scheme 192.168.1.x and the other network uses 192.168.100.x. Both networks are divided by a watchguard firewall. The printers are sitting on the 192.168.1.x subnet. I have added the IP address of the printer to the server IP address. So it has the 192.168.100.10 and 192.168.1.16 to the network card. I have used the HP standard TCP/IP port to setup the printer on the server. I can ping the printer on the 192.168.100.x subnet. Any ideas would be apreciated. Thank you

The problem, I believe is at your firewall.. you must open up ports to allow the Client to communicate its print request to your printers.. For HP JetDirect printing, you need to open port 9100...
Additionally, for "Network Printers", the print stream goes from the client to the print server, then to the print device (via the printer's JetDirect in your case). For this to work, if there is an intervening firewall, the firewall (on the print server side) must allow incoming connections on the Microsoft Networking ports:
TCP 139 and 445 UDP 137, 138 and 445
I would also suggest you publish your printer in Active Directory.. This will make finding the printer easier for your clients..
