Question : Dial-up Modem connectivity issues
|
|
Hi,
I am currently experiencing EXTREME difficulties with my dial-up modem, and would be grateful for some advice on how to proceed.
The modem is currently a 56k PCI Modem based on the Smartlink chipset (using the driver CD that came with modem identifies the modem as a Castlenet modem, but based on the Smartlink chipset) running on Windows XP.
Here is the situation... the modem appears to connect to the ISP fine...but then when I try to access any websites, the browser (Internet Explorer) then gives me a DNS error saying that the page is unavailable. Then, maybe on the next attempt at locating a page, I am sometimes successful, but the page loads very slowly....and eventually the modem disconnects.
I've enabled error logging on the modem, to see if this sheds any light...but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to :( I was wondering if someone who knew what they were looking for could have a look and point me in the right direction.
I have posted the log file here: http://www.techsupportforums.com/showthread.php?p=228965
I have a feeling the problem is based more to do with Windows than the actual modem, because I've recently replaced the old 56k modem with this one, and the problem still seems to exist, albeit in a rather worse state. I've also tried connecting to the same ISP with a different PC on the same phone line - and no problems exist there either.
I've tried ipconfig and the isp is assigning an IP, and subnet mask, gateway etc.... all appears in order there....
Am I missing something obvious? either visible from the logs, or from somewhere else? Thanks in advance for any help you can give! Regards, Jason.

Note: Only registered users can see your logs.
It doesnt sound like a problem with the modem but probably with your internet setup, or maybe your modem setup.
Go to IE > Internet Options > Connections > Settings > Properties > Networking > Internet Protocal > Properties
(note that this window may look the same as others, this is not your network settings but modem setup for your modem.)
You should not have any IP addresses set here, everything should be set to automatic. ie. 'Obtain an IP address automatically', and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'.
Click on Advanced > DNS . No DNS servers should be set. (delete them if you have some showing here) Click WINS . No Win servers should be set here (delete them if you can see any)
Let us know how you get on.
Seb.
