Question : Unabble to browse the network the network is not present or not started

I have  amchine on a network running W2000 SP4 It has worked fine for 3 years When I click on network neighborhood and click on enntire network I get the message "Unable to browse the network the network is not present or not started"

TCP/IP is in and working I can ping to and from
I can access the shares on this machine from elswhere on the network
Netbue1 is installed
I can access the internet from this machine
The workgroup is correct
Event viewer says there is only an error on PerfNet ???????
I have disable the NIC (its on board)
I have re-installed the NIC
I have done a manual rerpair on W2000
I have adawared, spybot'd, stingered, Symantec corpAV'd

Net view allows me to see all the other systems but bet use \\%severname%\%share% returns a the workstation service has not been started. At the same time the wind displays unable to find netU1.dll
If I run Net start it seems to complete
if I run net start workstation it says the requested servuice has already been started
If I then try to use net use it says the network is not present or not started.

I am not an idiot but ..................... Help.!!!!!!!!!!!
