Question : Running out of IP addresses on DHCP server scope
We are running a network using a DHCP scope of 192.168.22.20 to 192.168.22.254 on the DHCP server, but we need more available addresses. Expanding down (*.1-20) is not an option cause we need those for DCs and such.
We are using a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.
I am thinking, change the subnet mask to 255.255.254.0, expand the scope (i.e. create a new scope with the new subnet mask) on the DHCP server which will basically double our address pool giving us access to a range of 192.168.22.01 to 192.168.23.254.
Of course I know we need to manually update the clients which have static IPs and restart all others.
This seems to easy a solution, am I missing some caveats?
Answer : Running out of IP addresses on DHCP server scope
Subnets should not go over 250-300 Hosts. Ethernet efficiency is a problem with that many hosts (mostly due to broadcasts).
You need a new subnet. Add a LAN Router to the LAN and drop another subnet off of it.
