Question : smtp sending email from sharepoint

Hello we have just set up a sharepoint server on our windows server 2003 domain we trying to send an email to set up a service desk. The server we have set up for sharepoint is in a co-lo centre when i remote dekstop onto it then open a telenet service try connect to our smtp server it just sits there a black screen is the probelm with pur  co-lo firewall not leting commands out or our firewall not letting in the telnet commands?or is it exchange which sits @ out head office
