Question : mdaemon Email System

i have a new client that is running Mdaemon version 10. They are having a few issues sending and recieving emails.
there is retry queue which has some outgoing email sitting in there, some of it goes eventually. Also inbound when i try and do some telnet commands by connecting to there server externally it can takes ages for the mdaemon response to come up and when it does i cant use the normal ehlo command, It states 501 Invalid Characters detected. However when i do this internally i get a response straight away and can communicate with  the SMTP service.

I know a lot about Microsoft Exchange server but have never really used mdaemon before. If anyone has any advise it would be much appreciated.
