Question : Help Replacing DSL Router with D-Link Wireless router and Symantec VPN Firewall appliance 100
Greetings,
I would like to replace/upgrade my current home network which is as follows:
DSL Line (through Covad).
Provided Broadxent 8120 ADSL Router
HP PRocurve Switch 8-port
I would be replacing the Broadxent DSL Router and would like to put a Symantec VPN/Firewall Appliance 100 and also want to add a wireless connectivity from it using a D LINK DI524 802.11G ROUTER 54MBPS FIREWALL SWITCH
My problem right now is that I was told that the Symantec VPN/Firewall appliance could take over the Broadxent 8120 ADSL modem/Router. This broadxent has a built-in firewall and does NAT and everything, but I want to put the Symantec unit instead.
I also have the D-Link wireless so I can connect using my laptop from anywhere in the house. This D-Link router also has the same capabilities as the Broadxent.
Is there any way I can use the D-Link and the Symantec and take out the Broadxent from the picture? This is the current scenario:
____ _________
INTERNET ------>|ADSL|------->|HP Switch |
------- --------------
| | | |
Server PC1 PC2 LAPTOP
I am looking for something like this, but it is not working:
______ _________
INTERNET--------->|D-LINK|
------>|SY
MANTEC|
-------- --------------
| | | |
LAPTOP PC1 PC2 Server
Or this one here (preferred):
_______________
INTERNET-----------| SYMANTEC VPN |
----------------------
| | | |
PC1 PC2 Server ______
|D-Link|
--------
|
LAPTOP
I guess I can either take out the Broadxent in its entirely or do Bridge with it, but so far every single appliance has (I think) about the same capabilities as far as routing goes.
Can someone give me a head start converting my network here?
Thanks

I would do the bridge - or just lead traffic unfiltered forward ... even if the Broadxent is a little disproportionate for that task
_____ _______________
I-NET---|ADSL|----| SYMANTEC VPN |
------- ----------------------
| | | | WAN-port unused
PC1 PC2 Server | ___|___
| |D-Link| as wireless AP (or another AP)
| --------
|____| |
LAPTOP
I know, that most of these devices aren't set, where they should be, but let me explain:
- If you set the D-Link instead of the ADSL-(bridged)-device you have the disadvantage, that your Laptop won't be behind the sophisticated firewall
- If the symantec can accept ADSL, then just kick out the Broadxent
- If you connect D-Links WAN-port to Symantec-port, you don't have full access from the PCs to the Laptop (without unneccessary configuration) ... or you just want that this way, then you can hide the Laptop NATed behind the D-Link, but i don't see what it's for in your case
