Question : OSI Model: Data-Link Layer

Hi,

1) This is related to OSI model.
2) The layer #2 is Data-link layer
3) Per i read in the book, The function of this layer # 2 is "physical addressing"
- It was mentioned there as : MAC and LLC
4) I understood the "MAC" and knew how to get it
5) My Question: i) What does "LLC" stand for?, ii) How to get this "LLC" ?(for example: if i want to get the "MAC"; i just go to command prompt, and type in: ipconfig/all ....... and i will get the MAC address), ii) Why is  this "LLC" considered a "physical addressing" (for example: MAC is clear a physical "ID" of a device)
6) Thank you

tjie

Answer : OSI Model: Data-Link Layer

Hi tjie,

As hmare said LLC stands for "Logical Link Control". Regarding to your 2nd question. You're not able to see or get LLC info because it's a logical protocol responsible for managing the rate of data transmission between sender and reciever. LLC act as an interface between MAC and Network-Layer (MAC --> LLC --> Network Layer).

Why You can get MAC address?

Because It provides addressing and channel access control mechanisms that make it possible for several terminals or network nodes to communicate within a multipoint network. So, it's make sense to have kind of identification in order to mark all devices connected in the network.
