Question : Using 3 IP addresses on 1 laptop - will hardware profiles work?
|
|
Hi all,
I have a user's laptop that needs to be set up with three different IP addresses so they can switch as they enter different areas. We don't give all of our users permission to enter network settings, not to mention it's a pain to have to reenter all of the information teach time.
The laptop has only one NIC card so only one LAN connection appears in Network Connections. I set up three hardware profiles, booted to each, and set the respective IP addresses. Unfortunately, when I went back to the first, it had been reset to the last (same for the 2nd profile). It seems my IP's are not "sticking" or saving for each profile. Rather, all three profiles are remembering the most recent IP entered, regardless of what profile I'm in.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Like mav7469 said, DHCP would be easiest.
If you can't use DHCP, I wouldn't bother with multiple hardware profiles. You can add multiple IP addresses to a NIC under XP (and I think 2k). Just go to TCP/IP properties, click advanced and add each IP address and subnet. You will also need to enter DNS or WINS servers for each network and default gateways for each network. As long as the subnets for each network don't overlap, this should work.
