Question : Different netbios and DNS domain names in Active Directory

I have read that you should keep your netbios and DNS domain names the same when setting up an active directory domain.
(ex "abc.local" is dns domain name, so "abc" should be netbios domain name).

Can anyone tell me why?  The only reason I have heard before is "If you don't, it can be flakey".

Anyone have another reason or some documentation you can point me to?
