Question : Cannot browse to intranet web site. problems with hosts file?
|
|
Hi, I cannot browse to to an intranet web site from a new machine in our company, while all of the other ones can bring up the web site.
I copied the hosts file to C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc. One interesting point is that although there is an entry for intranet.aCustomer.npi in the hosts file, I cannot ping it by name, although the numerical ip address works. From other machines in the company, I can ping it by both name and numerical ip address.
I did try closing all browser windows and, when that didn't work, a reboot.
One final symptom. I tried bringing up the web site using http://[IP]/.../index.asp and that didn't work either! So I don't think it's just a problem with the hosts file (but I could be wrong!)
Thanks so much for any help that anyone can provide!

there should be an entry in the hosts file as follows: ip_of_web_server <tab> name_of_web_server
this will cause the machine to associate the name of the webserver with the ip.
if that doesn't resolve the issue, it may be a dns problem
