Question : Not able to ping through hostname

Hi,

I have a Domain Server(Windows 2003 R2) with DNS and ADS configured (192.168.1.1) and a RHEL 4 SE Linux server with Samba configured on the same, I am able to ping then windows network systems using IP but not hostnames. I have entered "nameserver 192.168.1.1" in resolv.conf. If i put the hostname in /etc/hosts on linux box it works, but doing manually for all the systems is a tedious process.
Note:
1) we are able to ping and access the Linux server from windows machine, and
2) we are able to ping windows machine from linux maching using IP address(but not hostname)

Thanks in advance

Cheers!!

Answer : Not able to ping through hostname

you must set DNS server setting on your linux box, pointing to the 2003 server (192.168.1.1).

Also use nslookup on the linux box to test. choose the server 192.168.1.1, then try to resolve hostname of the windows.
