Answer : How to Share a internet connection from one computer to another
My understanding, you are using USB Modem for Internet Access (Desktop) and is successful, and a Cross Cable for linking of Desktop and Latop. Both machine have set IP to automatically obtain (especially the Laptop).
When you link the two machine, is the network enable?
Control Panel-->Network Connections-->Double Click on Local Area Connection (Both Desktop and Latop status have to be connected)
Under Control Panel-->Network Connections, right click on the connection type (e.g. Your ISP), click on properties.
You should have an Advanced Tab as the last tab.
Proceed Under Internet Connection Sharing, select the Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection check box. Select "Local Area Connection"
You may want to try recreate your dial up connection on your desktop if Advanced Tab is not there at all
