Question : Secondary DC setup issue - DCPROMO

Im having a play with WINDOWS 2003 .NET ENTERPRISE edition. I have 2 servers, one the primary Name Server and one the Secondary.

However when i try to make the second server a secondary DC using DCPromo, i get the below error mesage in the Active Directory installation wizard:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain bulldog.pri:

The error was: "DNS server failure."
(error code 0x0000232A RCODE_SERVER_FAILURE)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.bulldog.pri

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS servers used by this computer contain incorrect root hints. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with following IP addresses:

192.168.0.2
192.168.0.1

- One or more of the following zones contains incorrect delegation:

bulldog.pri
pri
. (the root zone)

For information about correcting this problem, click Help.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Would this indicate that there was a record missing from the DNS database, i really dont know as this is my first serious play around with it.

Any hints or tips would be usefull.

Regards
Rob

Answer : Secondary DC setup issue - DCPROMO

First off the obvious.  Are the address' 192.168.0.2 & 192.168.0.1 running DNS and running?  Secondly check the record that it's pointing to in the forward lookup zone of bulldog.pri/_msdcs/dc/_tcp you should have a SRV record for each Domain Controller for kerbos & ldap, ldap is what is causing you the problem.  Make sure thoese recods are correct.

After you have verified the information correct and if you'r still having the problem use the nslookup tool.  If you are unfimilar with this tool here is an excellent link on how to use and troubleshoot with the tool.  Also it has explanations of what is happening as well as step by step instructions.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/help/default.asp?url=/windows2000/en/server/help/sag_DNS_tro_VerifyDomainSrvLocRRs.htm

The nslookup tool will help you verify if or what recods are incorrect.  With Active Directories intergration with DNS make sure you have a solid understanding of the nslookup tool.

Best of luck
