Question : MS Word Hangs / freezes when saving back to users network area

using windows 2000 server on multipal domains windows xp PRO on client machines, Security for users is handled by group policy..

this is in a school network with students on 1 sever and teachers on another.

when a student is saving back a word document to thier area, machine hangs on save as Box this then causes other machines, but not all to hang (other students dont have to be saving OR using office). this is a intermitent problem and does not effect other domain users or areas.

we had implemented 8.3 file names this did not seem to fix the issue so have removed it.

we have monitored network traffic through switches and servers there does not seem to be any problems with this.

we have virus scanned all servers and checked for spyware and removed spyware from client machines.

servers and clients are using sophos antivirus and we have a FIREBox unit for the firewall.

we are also looking at file fragmentation on the servers

Another idea would be to disable Sophos for a while on the server. I've seen Sophos causing problems on large (> 50 MB) files it tries to scan, esp. compressed files (.ZIP)
