Question : Assign Static IP using DHCP?
|
|
I have a controller (PLC) that requires a static IP to be assigned to it, before it can be put on the "Building Automation Network". Instead of requesting a Static IP from Information services (it takes too long for them to give me the IP address), can I use DHCP instead.
Here is what I am planning to do: 1. Temporary plug in my laptop into the network, and automatically get and IP address (which will be assigned by DHCP). 2. Configure the PLC controller with the IP address from step 1, and set it to be static.
Is this a valid way to go about it?

Not really. What happens when the Lease for the IP expires?
The statically configured PLC won't renew the lease, so it'll expire. That means someone else can be given the IP address which causes a conflict and one or the other starts failing.
