Question : Wireless mobile network
|
|
I have a customer who wants me to set up a wireless network for him so he can browse the net with his laptop while he walks around the house. I have done this a million times but i have a few questions..
1. Any recommended brands or cards 2mbps is fine no need for 11mbps? cheaper the better.
2. he uses a pcmcia card from the office for their connection, do i need to do anthing special not to mess that one up? same ssid or anything like that?
3. The other wireless networks i've setup were fixed (non-mobile) do i need to do anything to accomodate for the mobility? he lives in a 2-story house.
Thank you in advance! I love EE i've learned so much from here and love the fact that so many people consistently spend time helping other people. If only i had the time to help out more.

1. If he is the only user, and most of his traffic goes through a modem (or even ADSL), then 2mbps is fine. I personally prefer 11, as wireless is a shared medium, if you add more people, you fight for bandwidth.
2. Should be fine, most OSes will display the networks within range (so long as you broadcast beacons), but otherwise I think you can setup connections that it can switch between and it will remember WEP keys, etc.
3. Depends on how big the house is, construction, etc. You could look at locating the access point in a corner of the house, with a parabolic reflector behind it to strength it's signal to the rest of the house? Or use a directional antenna to strength and direct it? Otherwise locate it in the moddile of the house, on the floor on the second floor and see how it goes as the signal should propogate as a sphere. But it will really depend on the house, I've seen some rooms you cannot get signals in or out from due to the walls, etc.
Just my few opinions from my experiences.
